    How to: Kid-Safe Internet Browsing

The internet is a part of just about every kid’s modern life, which is a relatively new phenomenon. While the internet can provide a lot of great things for children like entertainment and a platform for learning, there are also some risks associated with unrestricted internet browsing. Not only could your child potentially download or install illegal or malicious (virus containing) files by accident, but there are also websites with adult content that they could get access to. This article will address how to “Kid-Safe” internet browsing so you can have some peace of mind regarding their internet activities.

    1. Have a Solid Anti-Virus Software
As you may know, kids love clicking on shiny and flashing things. Particularly on the internet, these are often ads and links to unsavory sites and downloads. This is a primary way that viruses and malware can get onto your machine. In order to protect against mistakes like this you can install a solid anti-virus program. Regularly scan your computer with the anti-virus, and make sure that the firewall is enabled if it came with the program. Check with your internet provider to see if they offer any anti-virus programs; for example, Windstream offers McAfee anti-virus protection in their online security packages.

    2. Keep Your Personal Information Guarded
There are several cases of internet security mishaps every day that occur because children get access to information they shouldn't. Don’t leave your wallet/purse lying around easily accessible. If a child finds a credit card it is very unlikely that they understand the implications of using it and they could get into a lot of trouble with it online in a very short amount of time. While you can usually fix any of these incidents, it will consume a lot of time and cause undue stress.

    3. Install an Ad-Block plug-in
Most internet browsers have plug-ins or extensions available to block ads on webpages. Simply doing this should limit the amount of low-quality sites your child can visit. This is great for security and also for the overall experience of the child.

    4. Use Filtering Software to Block Bad Sites
It is easy for a child to find a site that they shouldn't without knowing they are doing anything wrong. It is important to have parental controls in place to block sites that feature adult content. Putting parental controls in place give parents a peace of mind in knowing that their children are safe when accessing the Internet. Windstream offers parental control software in all of their security packages.

If you follow the above 4 steps you will have taken a huge step to creating a safe internet browsing experience for your children.
