How can I prevent my computer from getting viruses?

Here are some tips that can help you prevent your PC from getting a virus:

Installing anti-virus software on your PC and keeping it updated.

Windstream has an anti-virus program on our e-mail server, which prevents most viruses from being delivered. However not every virus is transmitted exclusively via e-mail. A good anti-virus system will scan your machine regularly to clean it from any infected files.

Install all necessary Operating System security updates on your PC.

Microsoft Windows vulnerabilities are constantly being discovered. Viruses continue to exploit old vulnerabilities because many users do not apply patches regularly. Neglect leaves not only your system at risk, but also PCs owned by anyone in your e-mail contact list. Also, we suggest you periodically use one of the available free online tools that will test your computer's exposure to security threats.

Be wary of e-mails with attachments.

Viruses lurk in attachments. We recommend not opening attachments from e-mail addresses unknown to you. It is generally not possible to get a virus simply by receiving an e-mail, but do not open any attachments that are unfamiliar to you.

Install a firewall for your PC.

Internet connections are not safe without one. Most newer versions of Microsoft Windows contain a firewall feature -- make sure it is always turned on. If you want more firewall protection, you should find one that monitors both inbound and outbound connection attempts. Firewalls are necessary even if you have a dial-up Internet connection.

Windstream Broadband Internet modems come with a built in firewall that you can manage and set to your preferred security level. Also Windstream does offer the Windstream Security Suite, powered by McAfee, to our Internet and Broadband customers. For more information, please visit our website at http://www.windstream.net.
