DSL vs. Cable
The difference in speed between DSL and cable depends on the circumstances in your local area.
- DSL provides a dedicated connection to your Internet service provider, which means the only users connected to your line are you and your ISP. With DSL, the speed of your Internet connection depends in part on the distance between your home and your provider’s nearest office. All Windstream customers connect their computers to the Internet through existing phone lines using a DSL modem, which maintains an uninterrupted digital connection that is active whenever their systems are in use.
- Cable service is delivered through the coaxial cable that is used to deliver cable television service. Like DSL, cable subscribers use a special modem to connect to the Internet, and their connection is also continuous when their computers are in use. However, instead of having a dedicated connection, cable subscribers are networked together within the same neighborhood or local area. Therefore, the speed depends on how many people in the neighborhood are connected to the Internet through the same cable source. The more the people who share the same network, the slower the connection.
